City Hall Vienna
Together with the Burg Theater, the Parliament and the University, the monumental City Hall makes up one the most beautiful architectural ensembles on the Ring. The Emperor Franz Josef laid the cornerstone himself on September 12th 1883.
Friedrich von Schmidt, designed the building that even from afar, as he said in his own words, “must speak of the traditional style of each era and meld with the blossoming galleries of the German Bourgeoisie”.
The predominant gothic style of the City Hall demonstrates, to a great extent, the obvious power and influence of the city’s bourgeoisie. The dominant focal point is definitely set on the height of the City Hall tower, followed by the powerful and richly endowed and ornamented arcades, with the entire width of the central galleries extending two floors upwards.
